Mid October Black Swallowtail Emergence

by Carol Z
(Chicago)

I thought this butterfly was going to wait until spring to come out but has emerged today (mid-October near Chicago). I don't know what to do. There aren't enough flowers in bloom for a food source, no one to mate with, no migration to warmer areas, etc. Do I release it?

Karen says:
Yes, I have had the same issue here in Minnesota with these late emerging swallowtails. I did release them and figured nature would take its course. We have had 80 degree days lately here in Minnesota!
