What will emerge from this Chrysalis?

by Wendy Locke
(The Villages FL)

What butterfly or moth is in Chrysalis right now in Florida? The chrysalis is about 2 inches long and has invaded my neighbor's hawthorn bushes and the side of his house. The caterpillar inside may be green and yellow and seems to have used very short pieces of hawthorn bush to make the chrysalis capsule.

Karen says:
Could it be the Gray Hairstreak butterfly? It can use the hawthorn as a host plant. Their caterpillars are small and green and the chrysalis are brownish black. The chrysalis is actually revealed when the caterpillar does it final shed of skin so it wouldn't be made of pieces of hawthorn bush. In the fall, the chrysalis overwinters and the butterfly emerges in Spring. Hope this helps.
