Territorial Monarch?

by Nan
(Houston, TX)

Yes, the Monarchs are still laying eggs in Houston, 3rd week of September. But yesterday morning, to my surprise, I saw a Monarch repeatedly chasing a Giant Swallowtail out of our courtyard.

They never seem territorial among their own species and I never expected them to be, as we have so many penta, butterfly weed, hummingbird bush and other nectar plants. Maybe they are learning it from the hummingbirds!
